The Dog Nobody Mentions: Four Hundred Years of Pets in Painting
The Met’s catalogue entry for a George Stubbs portrait describes the horse, the groom, the oak and the burdock leaves. It never mentions the dog. We measured twelve paintings to find out what actually changes when animals become pets.
